Colour Perception and Expression Year 2 Semester 1 - Bill Drew

We were taught how to paint in this class. This was my first time oil painting! Luckily they gave us the basic paint supplies for it. It was about this time I started really liking high key paintings, and I tried my best to create some light value paintings.

Pumpkins
I like this painting I think! The great thing about doing light values is being able to keep a lot of saturation in the darkest parts!

Pots
Learned how to do glazing in this one! Shiny :)

Figure Painting

Plein Air at Prospect Terrace
We went together as a class one day to paint outside! I already knew about and loved plein air paintings but I had never done them until this class. It's quite difficult!

Not sure what the assignment was, but I painted the area besides the canal.

Plein Air Trees
We did one of these each week for four weeks. Honestly I loved this series, and I tried to create different brush strokes in each.

I'm very glad RISD got me oil painting! The cost of supplies to start with and the fact that it had toxic fumes was too much for me to try on my own. But I found that I loved the medium and I want to make so many more paintings!

Visual Thinking Year 2 Semester 1 - Kelly Murphy

One of the best professors I had at RISD! Visual thinking was a concept class to help us become better at creating concepts, thinking and critiquing. I felt so lucky to have been put in Kelly's class (we didn't get to choose classes in Sophomore year) because she was so kind and helpful!

Exactly One Word
My word was Far! We all had different words and we tried to guess them in class!

Nouns of Assemblage
We got a list of ways groupings of animals were called. Such as a murder of crows, or a school of fish. Mine was a raft of penguins! My drawing is very on the nose compared to some others. We also guessed each other's in class.
This was also the first digital drawing where I felt like I was getting the hang of how to paint digitally. I struggle a lot with this medium, and I struggled so much more even after this piece, but it was exciting to feel it start to click!

Turn of Phrase
Similar thing! Mine was Under the Weather, and once again we guessed each other's phrases!

Same but Different
We had to do one piece that was romantic, and one tragic. The twist? We had to use every single element shown in one piece in the other.

OUR Favourite Thing
This followed after a week's assignment called My Favourite Thing. We wrote about a favourite object, before swapping it with another person during this week. I got to illustrate Mika Tilton's coin purse from her grandma! My object was Penguin. I won't post the art my classmate did of him, BUT more on him later ;)

Picture Within a Picture

How to ____
AHA it's Penguin! Who's my lil mob boss :)
Haha please don't take this too seriously!

A Year in the Life
I made a calendar but with only notable dates/events during the year.

This class was great. I liked to chat with Kelly often! Sometimes I kinda just lingered around other students conversations with her (hopefully that wasn't too annoying sorry!). It was because she was always giving useful information and advice, so I really wanted to soak that up. I was devastated to know she would be on sabbatical during my junior year. ;(

Visualizing Space Year 2 Semester 1 - Sichen Liu

Lots of learning perspective drawing skills in this class. Sophomore year is a lot of technical learning in illustration.

House Sketches

Room Drawings
I had already done tons of perspective drawings back in high school. In fact, the summer after this year I taught a spherical perspective class!

Space Playground
Felt real proud of this one! It's very big for a pencil drawing. Pencil drawings are much much slower to do than charcoal oh man.
I did a digitally coloured rendition of it too!

Shadow Projection

Drawing from Storyboard

Imagined Figure Drawing

Build a World
I honestly did not like how it turned out in the end, but little did I know, I would revisit this in my junior year and make it much better!
The problem I had was that I was using pencil pastel on smooth bristol paper. This was before I knew pastel needed a textured paper to be able to stay on, so I basically picked the worst kind of paper I owned to do this. I couldn't layer my colours at all, or make them vibrant and it was a large piece.

It's weird seeing this old version of the light city. I remember I looked through my past art at the end of junior year and was shocked that this piece was where my Solar City visual development project started. Gone are my little cat creatures sadly haha.
